(EDI) is the computer-to computer exchange of business information using a public standard. EDI is the central part of Electronic Commerce, because it enables businesses to exchange business information electronically much faster, and more cheaply and accurately than is possible using paperbased systems.
About fifty thousand private-sector companies in the United States, such as CSX, Federal Express, Eastman Kodak, American Airlines, Nike, NationsBank, JC Penny, and Prudential, currently use EDI. EDI is widely used in manufacturing, shipping, and utilities. One example of a trading partnership would be a customer sending a purchase order to a supplier.
